Carol’s 20th Anniversary Celebration.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we’re honored to shine a spotlight on one of our own— Carol A. Kingman, Esq., one of our dedicated attorneys at Southern Nevada Senior Law Program (SLP).

This year marks a remarkable milestone: Carol’s 20th anniversary with SLP. Her journey is one of resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice for seniors in our community. In this special feature, Carol reflects on her career, the challenges she’s overcome, and the profound impact of her work.

We recently sat down with Carol to discuss her incredible two decades of service with Senior Law Program.

What Inspired You to Join SLP 20 Years Ago?

In 2005, Carol was at a crossroads in her career. While considering a position with the City Attorney’s Office, she stumbled upon an opening at the Senior Law Project (SLP’s former name). It was her son who encouraged her to take the leap. “He asked me what ‘Elder Law’ was, and as I explained it, he said, ‘I think that would be a perfect place for you. You should apply,’” she recalls. That conversation changed everything. Two decades later, Carol is still here, driven by a passion for serving seniors and advocating for their rights.

Reflecting on 20 Years: A Milestone of Meaning

Reaching this 20-year milestone is both surprising and deeply meaningful for Carol. “It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years,” she says. “I remember my first day so clearly—how welcoming and enthusiastic everyone was.” For her, this anniversary is a testament to the importance of the work SLP does and the fulfillment she finds in making a difference.

A Memorable Case That Shaped Her Career

One case that left an indelible mark on Carol involved a frail woman with Alzheimer’s who had been kidnapped by her granddaughter and subjected to unimaginable abuse.  This was early in her career. “She was eventually found abandoned in Wyoming, dressed in boys’ clothes, with her hair cut off,” Carol shares. The case was complex, involving identity theft, elder abuse, and even an annulment of a fraudulent marriage. Through perseverance and dedication, Carol and the SLP team were able to restore the woman’s dignity, secure her rightful benefits, and bring her back to Southern Nevada. “It was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do,” she says.

Challenges and Triumphs as a Woman in Law

As a woman who entered law school at 48, Carol faced unique challenges. “I was older, and some firms didn’t know what to make of me,” she admits. But she turned her age into an advantage, leveraging her life experience and determination to succeed. Her advice to young women (and older women!) considering a career in law or nonprofit advocacy? “Don’t be afraid to take the leap of faith. It’s never too late to learn something new or change directions.”

Work-Life Balance and Staying Motivated

Balancing a demanding career with personal life is no small feat, but Carol has found a rhythm that works for her. “Routine is key,” she says. “I make sure to get enough sleep and unplug completely when I’m at home.” Her motivation comes from the clients she serves and the knowledge that her work makes a tangible difference in their lives.

Passions Beyond the Courtroom

Outside of work, Carol is a devoted college basketball fan. “March Madness is the best time of the year, except for Christmas,” she laughs. Whether attending games in person or watching from home, she loves the excitement of the tournament; she calls watching the basketball games her “cardio.” She’s also deeply involved with her church and cherishes time spent with her children and grandchildren.

Being a Woman in Leadership During Women’s History Month

As a woman in a leadership role at SLP, Carol is honored to be a role model. “I hope I can put a human face on the legal profession,” she says. “For many of our clients, their perception of lawyers is shaped by TV and movies. At SLP, we strive to show them respect and compassion.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

Carol hopes her work at SLP inspires the next generation of women leaders in law and advocacy. “A law degree opens so many doors,” she says. “It’s not just about working in a firm—it’s about finding the path that’s right for you.”

A Legacy of Compassion and Advocacy

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, Carol’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have. Her dedication to justice, her resilience in the face of challenges, and her unwavering compassion for her clients are an inspiration to us all. Here’s to 20 years of making a difference—and to many more to come.
