Las Vegas, NV – Today, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Department (LVMPD) is asking the community for help as detectives investigate a crime spree targeting seniors across the valley. These incidents began in February and continue to occur in multiple neighborhoods.
How the Scam Works
Suspects are targeting older adult who appear to be wearing high-end or valuable jewelry. Here is the pattern detectives have identified:
- Suspects approach seniors in a vehicle, often pulling up close and asking for directions.
- After receiving directions, they offer a “prayer” or blessing as a way to thank the victim.
- While performing the “prayer,” suspects remove the victim’s jewelry without them realizing it.
- They than quickly leave the area in a vehicle.
Many victims do not discover their jewelry missing until much later.
Who the Suspects Are
Detectives report that multiply individuals, both men and women, are involved. They range widely in age, and have been using different vehicles in different incidents. LVMPD has released a video to help identify the suspects.
What Seniors Should Do
- Do not approach or lean into vehicles if someone you don’t know calls you over.
- Avoid displaying expensive jewelry while walking alone.
- Politely decline physical contact, such as a prayer, blessing, or hug from strangers.
- Stay aware of your surroundings. If someone makes you uncomfortable, move to a populated area.
- Report suspicious behavior immediately.
