Las Vegas, NV – On April 16, Southern Nevada Senior Law Program (SLP) joins organizations nationwide to observe National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD), a day dedicated to helping seniors and families talk about and document their healthcare wishes before a crisis occurs.
National Healthcare Decisions Day encourages all adults to plan ahead by completing advance directives and health care powers of attorney (HCPOA), legal documents that spell out who will speak for you and what kind of care you want if you cannot speak for yourself. Yet, it’s estimated that only 46% of older adults have these documents in place.
“Planning for future healthcare choices is one of the most important gifts you can give yourself and your family,” said Diane Fearon, Executive Director of Senior Law Program. “On National Healthcare Decisions Day, we want every senior in Southern Nevada to know that putting your wishes in writing is simple, free, and powerful. We are here to help you do it.”
In honor of NHDD, SLP is highlighting free services to help seniors protect their healthcare choices and gain peace of mind:
  • Basic Estate Planning and Health Care Power of Attorney Workshops: No-cost workshops where seniors learn about estate planning basics and execute their Healthcare Power of Attorney right on the spot, giving them the power to appoint someone they trust to make medical decisions on their behalf.
  • Mobile HCPOA Workshops: We bring the workshops directly to the community: at senior centers, senior apartments, libraries, and other local sites, making it easier than ever for seniors to complete their advance directives close to home.
“A Healthcare Power of Attorney isn’t about giving up control; it’s about keeping it,” said Chelsea Crowton, Esq., Supervising Attorney. “Many seniors think these documents are only for people who are very old or very sick. That is simply not true. No matter your age, having a plan means your wishes are known so your loved ones can honor them.”
All Senior Law Program legal services are free for Southern Nevada residents aged 60 and older. On National Healthcare Decisions Day and every day, the organization stands ready to help seniors protect their dignity, autonomy, and peace of mind.
