February 29, 2024 – The Southern Nevada Senior Law Program (SLP) kicked off the first of a series of workshops in 2024 catering to Hispanic seniors. The workshop, hosted completely in Spanish, was focused around Fundamentals of Estate Planning/Power of Attorney Health Care, and aimed to empower Spanish-speaking seniors in Southern Nevada with essential knowledge about estate planning and healthcare decision-making. The Spanish workshop marked a pivotal moment in the program’s ongoing commitment to empowering seniors through no-cost legal services.

“We are thrilled to kick off this series of workshops conducted entirely in Spanish and truly help break barriers for our Spanish speaking community” said Diane Fearon, Executive Director of SLP. ” By offering this workshop in Spanish, we aim to make crucial legal information on estate planning and health care directives more accessible and understandable to our Spanish-speaking seniors, empowering them to make informed decisions about their future.”

The workshop covered essential topics including understanding estate planning fundamentals, creating power of attorney for health care documents, and making informed decisions regarding health care directives. Led by experienced legal professional, Roberto Campos, Esq of Solomon Dwiggins Freer & Steadman, LTD., the workshop provided attendees with valuable insights and resources to navigate the complexities of estate planning effectively. “It’s an honor to volunteer with the Senior Law Program and to be part of an organization dedicated to ensuring equitable access to legal resources for all seniors in Southern Nevada, being able to guide seniors directly through today’s workshop is a critical first step for them in these important decisions” said Campos.

In conjunction with the successful launch of the inaugural Spanish-language workshop, SLP is proud to announce the expansion of its Senior Advocates Pro Bono Program. This initiative calls upon attorney volunteers to contribute their expertise and time to serve the senior community through pro bono legal services. SLP offers pro bono opportunities for serving vulnerable seniors and reports volunteer hours to the Nevada State Bar for the award of up to 4CLEs each calendar year for 12 hours of pro bono service. Additionally, SLP offers CLE training on both the Health Care Power of Attorney and on Basic Estate Planning. Attorneys interested in participating are encouraged to contact SLP for more information on how they can make a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors in Southern Nevada.

SLP is dedicated to serving the diverse needs of the senior community. By breaking down language barriers and providing accessible educational opportunities, the program continues to fulfill its mission of empowering seniors through no-cost legal services.
